The Remote West Fjords

Eight days

Day 1, Arrival and journey to Stykkishólmur

 

Departure from airport and Arrival and check in at Stykkisholmur ferry village by the Breiðafjörður fjord of thousand islands.

 

Day 2, Stykkishólmur and West fjords by Ferry

 

We sale north by the islands with the ferry Baldur to the West Fjords.  Drive on to the Westermost point of Europe, the Látrabjarg bird cliffs nature reserve. Those cliffs are the home of some of the largest seabird colonies in the North Atlantic. We expect to see Puffins, rasorbills, guillemots and gannets. We take the mountain pass to the amazing orange beach Raudisandur. Dinner and overnight stay in the south end of the fjords.

 

Day 3, Travel north the fjords to Ísafjörður

 

We travel up the through the fjords to Ísafjörður, the main town of the region. In the heart of the region we come by the pearl of the west fjords the Dynjandi waterfall. We stay for two nights in Ísafjörður.

Day 4, The far West of Hesteyri

 

We take the small ferry boat to the abandoned village at Hesteyri. After WW2 the farms were abandoned and has become a nature reserve only accessible by boat. We take a walk to the old village area of Ísafjörður to find a restaurant in one of the oldest houses in Iceland.

 

Day 5,  Ísafjörður and Drangsnes.

 

Driving in through the many inlet fjords of the Ísafjarðardjúp gives more beautiful views. We arrive at our tiny fishing village Drangsnes in the afternoon for the boat trip to Grimsey island where thousands of puffins breed and fly continuously in from the surrounding waters with small fish in the beak to feed the puffin chicks. Overnight in Drangsnes hotel.

 

Day 6, From Drangsnes back to Reykjavík.

 

We leave our friends in Drangsnes for the road to the south.  On the way there are plenty of photo opportunities and we are back in volcanic areas at the Grábrók crater and Glanni waterfall in the Norðurárdalur, coming to the Borgarfjörður area. Overnight in the capital Reykjavík.

 

Day 7, Reykjavík

 

Free day in Reykjavík. Explore the old town, the fishing port and handcraft shops.

 

Day 8, Departure

 

Departure day. Shuttle to the airport.
